Cruise Lines

The many different cruise lines available to choose from can make finding the right cruise a bit confusing. Each specific cruise line has different strengths and weaknesses. Some are also much more expensive than others, but offer a more luxurious experience. When making the choice, determine your price range first and then decide what type of experience you are looking for.

Cruise lines can be separated into four basic categories: luxury, premium, mainstream, and budget. Luxury cruise lines, such as Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Silversea Cruises, are the most expensive, but offer the most luxurious experience. They tend to have the best food, the best service, and the ship load is generally a good deal smaller than the others. Some, such as Regent, offer an “all-suite affair” meaning every cabin is a suite and has a private balcony.

Premium cruise lines, such as Celebrity Cruises and Princess Cruises, aren’t quite as ritzy and expensive as the luxury cruises, but are a step above the mainstream, mid-price cruises. Mainstream are the most popular among teens, families, young couples and singles from 20-30 years old.  These include Carnival Cruise lines, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise, and Royal Caribbean International. You can often find great deals on these cruises, and will still have a great experience with plenty of luxuries and great food.

Budget cruises, such as easyCruise, don’t offer as luxurious of an experience, but are generally well kept, the food is decent and you can find killer deals with these. Other options for cruises include certain specialty cruise lines, which include adventure cruises, river cruises, and even sailboat cruises. Adventure cruise lines, like Abercrombie and Kent, go to places such as Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands. River cruises go up and down large, well known rivers, such as the Delta Queen on the Mississippi River and the Sonesta, which floats the Nile River.
